The dunes of the Belice Nature Reserve are a rare and precious natural environment. They are formed by the wind, which carries and accumulates sand, creating small ridges along the coast. The dunes are constantly moving and slowly change shape over time.
Despite the heat, wind, and salt, many plants are able to survive in this harsh environment. These plants, called “psammophilous” plants, have very long roots that help hold the sand together and make the dunes more stable.
Among the most common species are the sea lily, sea holly, and marram grass, a plant essential for dune formation.
The dunes are not only a landscape of great beauty, but also an important habitat for many animal and plant species.
