La tonnara di Selinunte racconta la storia di un grande progetto mai completato. Negli anni ’40 si tentò di avviare la pesca del tonno nel mare davanti all’Acropoli di Selinunte. Le forti correnti e il mare spesso agitato rendevano però molto difficile fissare le reti della tonnara. Per questo motivo le attività vennero spostate più volte verso Torretta Granitola. Non esistono oggi edifici della tonnara, ma restano importanti testimonianze di quel periodo. Sulla spiaggia e nei fondali vicini sono state ritrovate grandi ancore in ferro usate per bloccare le reti sul fondo del mare. Fotografie storiche mostrano pescatori e operai mentre trasportano le pesanti attrezzature lungo la spiaggia, raccontando la fatica e l’impegno della comunità marinara. Ancora oggi la zona della “Tonnara”, ai piedi dei templi di Selinunte, conserva il ricordo di questo antico legame tra il mare e la pesca del tonno.
The tuna fishery of Selinunte tells the story of a great project that was never completed. In the 1940s, attempts were made to start tuna fishing in the sea facing the Acropolis of Selinunte. However, strong currents and rough seas made it very difficult to anchor the tuna nets.
For this reason, the operations were moved several times toward Torretta Granitola. Today, no buildings of the tuna fishery remain, but important traces of that period still survive. Large iron anchors used to secure the nets to the seabed have been found on the beach and in the nearby waters. Historic photographs show fishermen and workers carrying heavy equipment along the shore, telling the story of the hard work and dedication of the fishing community. Even today, the area known as “Tonnara,” at the foot of the temples of Selinunte, preserves the memory of this ancient connection between the sea and tuna fishing.
