All’inizio del Novecento Marinella di Selinunte era molto diversa da oggi. Era una piccola borgata di pescatori che si animava soprattutto nei mesi estivi. Da Palermo, Porticello, Castellammare del Golfo, Mazara e altri paesi della Sicilia arrivavano centinaia di pescatori per la stagione della pesca delle sardine. Le barche venivano tirate sulla spiaggia a forza di braccia e i pescatori dormivano sotto grandi tende fatte con le vele delle imbarcazioni. Nel 1901 Marinella contava appena 132 abitanti, ma durante l’estate la borgata diventava un luogo pieno di vita, lavoro e incontri. La pesca era il cuore della comunità e diede alla storia e l’identità del borgo Selinunte.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Marinella di Selinunte was very different from today. It was a small fishing village that came alive mainly during the summer months.
From Palermo, Porticello, Castellammare del Golfo, Mazara, and other towns in Sicily, hundreds of fishermen arrived for the sardine fishing season. The boats were pulled onto the beach by hand, and the fishermen slept under large tents made from the sails of their boats.
In 1901, Marinella had only 132 inhabitants, but during the summer the village became a lively place full of work, life, and encounters.
Fishing was the heart of the community and gave history and identity to the village of Selinunte.
