La Caretta Caretta è la tartaruga marina più diffusa nel Mar Mediterraneo. Vive quasi sempre in mare aperto e raggiunge la spiaggia solo per deporre le uova. Durante l’estate, soprattutto nei mesi di giugno e luglio, le femmine arrivano sulla costa di notte per scavare un nido nella sabbia. Con le pinne posteriori creano una buca profonda dove depongono fino a 200 uova, che si schiudono dopo circa due mesi. Le piccole tartarughe, appena nate, raggiungono il mare seguendo la luce naturale dell’orizzonte. La spiaggia della Riserva del Belice è uno dei luoghi scelti dalla Caretta caretta per la nidificazione, un evento molto raro e prezioso. Per questo è importante rispettare le dune e limitare il disturbo umano, così da proteggere una specie simbolo del Mediterraneo.
The Caretta caretta is the most widespread sea turtle in the Mediterranean Sea. It lives almost entirely in open waters and comes ashore only to lay its eggs.
During the summer, especially in June and July, females reach the coast at night to dig a nest in the sand. Using their rear flippers, they create a deep hole where they lay up to 200 eggs, which hatch after about two months. The baby turtles, once born, reach the sea by following the natural light of the horizon. The beach of the Belice Nature Reserve is one of the nesting sites chosen by the Caretta caretta, a very rare and precious event. For this reason it is important to respect the dunes and limit human disturbance in order to protect one of the Mediterranean’s symbolic species.
